Need Wisdom Teeth Removed? We're Here to Help!
At Burlington Dental Center, we specialize in the safe and efficient removal of wisdom teeth to prevent potential dental issues and alleviate discomfort. Our skilled dental team uses the latest techniques and technology to ensure a smooth procedure and recovery.
Why Wisdom Teeth Removal is Necessary
Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last set of teeth to develop. While some people never have issues with their wisdom teeth, many will require their removal for several reasons:
Impaction: Wisdom teeth that do not have enough room to grow properly can become trapped (impacted) within your jaw, potentially leading to pain and infection.
Decay: Due to their position at the back of the mouth, it can be challenging to keep the wisdom teeth clean. Often, these teeth develop cavities which will need to be addressed either with fillings or an extraction.
Cysts and Infection: Impacted wisdom teeth can lead to the formation of cysts and other infections in the mouth, which can damage teeth roots and jawbone.
The Wisdom Teeth Removal Process & What to Expect
Removing wisdom teeth is a standard procedure that involves several key steps:
Pre-Procedure Exam: Includes X-rays or 3D imaging to evaluate the position of the wisdom teeth and plan the best approach for removal.
Anesthesia Options: We offer various forms of anesthesia to ensure your comfort during the procedure. The options range from local anesthesia or nitrous oxide to IV sedation in select cases, depending on your specific needs and preferences.
Extraction Process: The gum tissue over the tooth is opened, any bone covering the tooth is removed, and the tooth itself is extracted. In some cases, the tooth may be divided into segments to facilitate a less invasive removal.
Recovery Guidance: Post-operative instructions will be provided to help manage swelling, prevent infection, and promote healing. We will prescribe pain management solutions and advise on diet and activity restrictions for a few days post-surgery.
*Note that in some cases, such as challenging impactions, we may choose to refer you to an oral surgeon for the wisdom tooth removal. These referrals occur when we feel that an oral surgeon can do the extractions more efficiently and with less surgical risk.
We work with an excellent team of skilled oral surgeons (usually Oral Surgery of Kansas) who will take great care of you.
Special Considerations for At-Risk Patients
Patients with specific medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, untreated high blood pressure, or those taking medications like blood thinners, should consult with their primary care physician to discuss any special precautions needed prior to surgery.
Failure to have medical clearance may delay your extractions.
